Gigabit Ethernet

Ethernet has been the dominant networking protocol since its inception in the early 1970's. The Fast Ethernet protocol increased Ethernet speed from 10 to 100 Mbps. Gigabit Ethernet builds on top of the Ethernet protocol, but increases speed over Fast Ethernet to 1 - 10 Gbps. Since Gigabit Ethernet technology is an extension of the original Ethernet protocol, users are able to leverage their existing knowledge base to manage and maintain gigabit networks. Gigabit Ethernet solutions work alongside existing ATM, Fast Ethernet and Ethernet networks.
