Aspen Beowulf Cluster Management Software (ABC) Features

Here are some of the major features of Aspen Beowulf Cluster management software (ABC) - current as of version 4.1.

Multi-Valued States

ABC now displays a number of status flags, such as "pending events received" and "on battery power," as separate from the main "state" of each node. Get a clearer picture of what your nodes are really up to. This is also used in conjunction with the IPMI Polling feature (below).

IPMI Polling

When your nodes are too loaded for SNMP queries to finish reliably, the ABC Poller lets you know with the new "responding slowly" state flag, but continues to monitor critical health values for those nodes by querying IPMI on those nodes directly (where equipped). Never lose a critical piece of information like an over-temperature warning just because the nodes are bogged down!

PAM Authentication

Log into ABC the same way you log into your cluster's master node! ABC now uses the same user names and passwords as the master node itself. You can still assign "ordinary" users administrative privileges in ABC, though, as needed.

Remote Node Control

The "Shutdown/Reboot" and "Wake-on-LAN" pages have been combined into a comprehensive "Remote Node Control" page. These operations now also make use of IPMI capabilities on the nodes (where equipped).

Improved Aspen Copy/Restore

Aspen Copy and Restore now provide improved support for RAID and LVM disk configurations, including RAIDs on logical volumes and physical volumes on RAIDs.

Support Enhancements

Upgrades to the HTTP engine inside ABC, for additional performance improvements. Better support for task execution between 32-bit and 64-bit nodes in a mixed cluster. Remote Terminal improved for better application compatibility.

Remote Terminal

Use your Java-enabled browser to access a terminal window on any node of the cluster, via a secure connection. Uses either SSH or IPMI Serial-over-LAN support, if available.
