Object-Based Storage

By decoupling the namespace from the underlying hardware, object-based storage systems enable you to build much larger storage clusters. You can scale out object-based storage systems using economical commodity hardware, and you can replace hardware easily when it malfunctions or fails.

Ceph’s CRUSH (Controlled Replication Under Scalable Hashing) algorithm liberates storage clusters from the scalability and performance limitations imposed by centralized data table mapping. Typical deployment model.

Ceph Storage Clusters consist of two daemons: a Ceph Monitor which maintains a master copy of the cluster map; and a Ceph OSD Daemon (OSD) that stores data as objects on storage nodes. The minimum requirements for a Ceph Cluster is one Ceph Monitor and two Ceph OSD daemons for data replication. The Ceph Documentation project is a good resource to further study Ceph on configuration and deployment.
