Ceph Storage Clusters for Scalability and Reliability

Ceph is a next generation open-source distributed object-based storage system that is designed for massive scalability, high performance and reliability. Ceph Storage Clusters use a distributed object storage service known as the Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store (RADOS), which provides applications with block, object, and file system storage in a single unified space.

Aspen Systems partners with industry-leading hardware vendors to provide a wide selection of high density storage solutions that are optimized for Ceph. Aspen Systems integrates all hardware and software which gives you a reliable, scalable, “ready to deploy” Ceph storage cluster that is highly flexible and easy to manage.

Designed for Reliable Large Scale Storage Deployments

With the advancement of large scale cloud computing platforms like OpenStack, the business of data storage has been forever changed. Often called “the serverization of storage”; the replacement of purpose-built/proprietary data silos with economical server hardware, has proven itself to be both more reliable and more resilient.

Object-Based Storage

Organizations prefer object-based storage when deploying large scale storage systems, because it stores data more efficiently. Object-based storage systems separate the object namespace from the underlying storage hardware—this simplifies data migration.

Why it Matters

By decoupling the namespace from the underlying hardware, object-based storage systems enable you to build much larger storage clusters. You can scale out object-based storage systems using economical commodity hardware, and you can replace hardware easily when it malfunctions or fails.

The Ceph Difference

Ceph’s CRUSH (Controlled Replication Under Scalable Hashing) algorithm liberates storage clusters from the scalability and performance limitations imposed by centralized data table mapping. It replicates and re-balance data within the cluster dynamically—eliminating this tedious task for administrators, while delivering high-performance and infinite scalability.

Ceph Storage Clusters Are a Better Way to Store Data

Ceph can transform your organization’s IT infrastructure and your ability to manage vast amounts of data. If your organization runs applications with different storage interface needs, Ceph is for you! Ceph’s foundation is the Reliable Autonomic Distributed Object Store (RADOS), which provides your applications with object, block, and file system storage in a single unified storage cluster.

This makes Ceph flexible, highly reliable and easy for you to manage. Each one of your applications can use the object, block or file system interfaces to the same RADOS cluster simultaneously, which means Ceph storage clusters serve as a flexible foundation for all of your data storage needs.

Ceph Storage Cluster Deployment Model

Ceph Storage Clusters consist of two daemons: a Ceph Monitor which maintains a master copy of the cluster map; and a Ceph OSD Daemon (OSD) that stores data as objects on storage nodes. The minimum requirements for a Ceph Cluster is one Ceph Monitor and two Ceph OSD daemons for data replication. The Ceph Documentation project is a good resource to further study Ceph on configuration and deployment.

The following diagram displays a typical deployment model:
